In the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and was praying there – Mark 1:35

I am someone that enjoys being alone. While I like being around people, I am just as content being by myself, and so I tend to spend a lot of time alone with my thoughts. So when I was challenged the other day to carve out time and sit in silence with God, I thought it would be pretty easy. I was wrong. Sitting in silence and waiting on God may sound easy, but it’s not because the moment we stop talking and doing, our thoughts get louder and hearing God’s voice gets harder. But here’s the thing, God’s voice is described as a gentle whisper, and the only way to hear a whisper is by blocking out the noise and pressing in; we need to incline our ears to hear His sweet and gentle words. And in the midst of the chaos that is our world, His words are more necessary than ever and His guidance is more crucial than ever. As we go about our day today, can I encourage us to follow in the footsteps of Jesus and step away to a quiet place to just sit and commune with God. Even if it’s for five minutes, let’s block out the world around us and just sit at His feet and listen, because I have no doubt that if we do that, He will meet us right where we are.

Lord God, thank you that you love us enough that You reach down for us. You incline your ear to hear our prayers and you long to guide and direct us in the ways we should go. Today, may we find space to have a few minutes at Your feet listening to your soft whisper and may we be reminded that Your voice is the only one that matters. We love you, Lord. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
