Minute Devotions: Loving the unloveable.

I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. – John 13:34 (NRSV)

Some people are easy to love. They treat you well, so loving them in return isn’t difficult. However not everyone is easy to love. People can be difficult and it can be hard to love them because we may not think they deserve it, but God’s command is simple, we need to love people. We’re not called to just love the people we like, but to love ‘one another’, to love our neighbors as ourselves, including the difficult neighbors. Loving people unconditionally is hard, but it can be done by the grace of God. By fixing our eyes on Jesus, it becomes easier to see past people’s actions and just love them. When we love people unconditionally, not only does it bless them, it blesses us and ultimately points people to Jesus, where true unconditional love is found.

Prayer

Father, we thank you that for Your unconditional and relentless love of us. We pray, Lord, that You would give us a heart that just loves unconditionally. We ask that You would give us the grace to see past people’s actions to their heart and just love them as you love us. Amen.
