Minute Devotions: Love is an action.

Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. – Romans 12:10 Love is an action. Four simple words that rang loudly in my ears and stirred around in my spirit and got me thinking about my own actions. She was right, love is an action. Yes, it’s a feeling we have, but more than that, it’s a choice we make. We choose to love someone, or we choose not to. We choose to serve someone, or we choose not to. Love requires a response of some sort from us and we choose what that response will … Continue reading Minute Devotions: Love is an action.

Minute Devotions: Constant

Life is full of change. Every day, things change all around us; seasons, weather, people. Things are constantly changing and it can be hard to keep up with what’s what. But there is one thing that is unchanging, God. Regardless of what is happening around us, God is unchanging. Hebrews 13:8 tells us that ‘Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever more,’ and He is. Regardless of what is happening around us, or within us, God doesn’t change. He hasn’t changed from the beginning of eternity and He won’t change now; He is steadfast and constant and faithful. And … Continue reading Minute Devotions: Constant

Minute Devotions: Seeking Peace

Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord – Hebrews 12:14 Love thy neighbour. It’s a beautiful mandate that Jesus gives us, but it’s not always easy to live out. In a world where we have virtual neighbours and everyone can give an opinion on something from behind their keyboard, it can be hard to love people, especially when they are being malicious or are dragging you through the mud because you hold a different belief to them. But if we want people to see Jesus, we need to be Jesus … Continue reading Minute Devotions: Seeking Peace

Minute Devotions: Loving Correction

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you – Psalms 32:8 Correction is rarely fun. It generally comes on the back of having done something wrong, or incorrectly, and if we are honest, we rarely if ever enjoy it. It can be painful. But it’s also necessary. In order to keep our hearts right and our actions right, we need to be corrected when we go off track. It’s not a form of punishment but of love; when you love someone you want them to do … Continue reading Minute Devotions: Loving Correction

Up close and Personal

Recently I was driving through the South Island of New Zealand on my way to some work events. I had never been to the South Island before so it was a new experience for me with new scenery to observe and gush over. And there is lots to gush over in the South Island. Beautiful mountains, long winding river beds and lush green pastures are just some of the delightful landscape you will see as you drive around. We needed to get from Christchurch to Nelson, which meant we got to travel some long winding roads; roads that were hugged … Continue reading Up close and Personal

Minute Devotions: Goodness of God

You are good and do good; Teach me Your statutes – Psalm 119:68 God is good. Let me say that again. God is good. It’s easy in the midst of pain and anger and confusion to doubt that, but He is. He is good, does good and wants what is good for us. And that’s the hardest part to believing that He’s a good God, because when our lives are a mess, or when our prayers go unanswered, or when we are surrounded by heartache and devastation, it’s hard to believe, really deep down to our soul, that God is … Continue reading Minute Devotions: Goodness of God

Minute Devotions – What’s your worth?

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. – John 3:16 ESV How much do you believe you are worth? Do you believe that you are valuable and worthy? Or do you believe that you are unimportant and not deserving of happiness and love? Many people find it hard to accept that they are valuable and worthy; worthy to be respected and loved and listened to and cared for. But you are worthy. You are valuable. You are important. How do I know this? … Continue reading Minute Devotions – What’s your worth?

Minute Devotions: You are on His mind.

How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast the sum of them! Psalm 139:17 God thinks about you. Often. It’s hard to understand sometimes; the Creator of heaven and earth thinking about us, but He does. Before we were formed in our mother’s womb, God was thinking about us. He was designing us, our personality, looks, fingerprints, all designed by Him. From the moment He breathed us into existence, He has had His eyes on us and His thoughts on us. His thoughts towards us are pure and precious and innumerable. What a wonderful thought to know … Continue reading Minute Devotions: You are on His mind.

On this Christmas Day

And just like that, Christmas has arrived. Each year it seems that the days go by quicker and quicker and suddenly, you’re standing in line waiting to pay for an armful of Christmas gifts. I don’t know about you, but certainly in my life, it has felt like Christmas has crept up on me and I am completely unprepared for it. However now that it is here, I am so glad because I am ready to stop and rest and just be. I am ready to stop and breathe. It has been a big year. Life has been challenging and … Continue reading On this Christmas Day

It’s about the one.

The Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. The story in John 4 (4:1-10) is well-known: Jesus encounters a divorced woman at the well, they chat, and He tells her all about her life. She in turns run into town and tells everyone about the man who could be the long-awaited Messiah and brings half the town back with her. For me, it is a great story, one of redemption and grace and a beautiful reflection of the heart of God. But there is one verse that really speaks to me in this story and it’s verse 4:4 ‘Now he had to … Continue reading It’s about the one.
