New hope.

A couple of years ago I picked up a book called Every Moment Holy. It’s a book of liturgies for everyday life situations and it holds the view, as I understand it, anyway, that every moment is holy. It has some beautiful little prayers for worship in it and can put words to things when we can’t. There are days when I don’t have words, and I can flip through the book and find some words to prayer over what I’m feeling.

One of my favourites is the liturgy for the Ritual of Morning Coffee (no surprise there to anyone that’s known me for more than 5 minutes) and it is one that I sit and read and reflect on while I am drinking my morning coffee. This is how it reads:

Meet me, O Christ, in this stillness of morning.
Move me, O Spirit, to quiet my heart.
Mend me, O Father, from yesterday’s harms.
From the discords of yesterday, resurrect my peace.
From the discouragements of yesterday, resurrect my hope.
From the weariness of yesterday, resurrect my strength.
From the doubts of yesterday, resurrect my faith.
From the wounds of yesterday, resurrect my love.
Let me enter this new day, aware of my need, and awake to your grace, O Lord. Amen.

As I sat at our dining table reading it this morning, I was struck by the prayers of resurrection.
Life has a way of taking the wind out of our sails sometimes. I know of more than a few people, me included, that are travelling through a heard season right now. But as I read the prayers of resurrection, I was reminded that resurrection is possible and there is only One who can resurrect things back to life, Jesus.

Jesus Himself was resurrected from the dead. He had, and still has, the ultimate and untouchable power over life and death. He is the only one who has the power to heal and mend our broken hearts. Lamentations 3:22-23 tells us, Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

His mercies are new every morning. Every day is another opportunity to start fresh. To get up and try again. And the hope we are assured of is that Jesus will be there each morning. No matter how hard the day before was. No matter how badly we messed up. No matter how cruel the world may have been to us the day before. Jesus will be there, every morning.

As sure as the sun rises each day, the Son will be there each day, calling us to His great love. Reminding us that He was, and is, and always will be there with His arms outstretched us. Reminding us that only He can resurrect anything and bring what appears to be dead or lost, back to life.

Only Jesus can fully resurrect our peace and pour out a peace that surpasses all human understanding (Phil 4:7)

Only Jesus can resurrect our hope and remind us that nothing is impossible for Him (Mark 10:27).

Only Jesus can resurrect our strength and give us the ability and energy to face another day (Isaiah 40:31).

Only Jesus can resurrect our faith when the world has felt crushing and remind us that eternity is in His hands and the One that created heaven and earth will never leave us or forsake us (Deuteronomy 3:16).

And only Jesus can resurrect our love when we are betrayed and let down by others and remind us that His love is endless and unconditional and beautiful (Romans 8:38-39).

Today is a new day. Another chance to get up and start again. And maybe for you, when you woke up this morning, you were full of joy and energy for a new day. Or maybe, all you managed was to get out of bed and make it to the lounge. Maybe today is a day or great expectation or anxious dread, and all you can do is put one foot in front of the other as you navigate the day. All of those and everything in between are okay. Life can be complex, and we navigate it as best as we can. Regardless of what your day started out like, one thing you can be sure of is that Jesus, the resurrected King of Kings, and Lord of Lords, is waiting for you with arms outstretched. He is calling you to His side, offering His love and peace and joy.

The greatest encouragement I can give you today is to run to Jesus. Run to His arms and take rest in his love and let the Maker of heaven and earth resurrect your peace, hope, strength, faith, and love.
