New Orleans – Reflections by the window

It’s 2pm on a Tuesday afternoon and I am sitting in a funky little café in New Orleans, drinking coffee and people watching. I had somehow managed to get myself lost while walking to my destination and saw this little café on the corner and decided to give it a shot. As soon as I walked in, gentle jazz music was playing as other patrons sat around on their laptops working away; my kind of place! I ordered my coffee (which just so happened to be amazing! CC’s Coffee House in New Orleans for the win!), took a corner couch … Continue reading New Orleans – Reflections by the window

Running with eyes wide open – Cambodia

This morning myself and a few of the guys went for a morning run through the streets of Kompong Thom, the area we are currently staying in. We left the hotel at 6am and headed off through the back streets, running past families as they got ready for the day. It was an attack on the senses, to say the least. The streets were full of rubbish and dirt water puddles, with dogs strolling in and out of them. We ran along part of the river and took in the smoke coming out of the little shacks on the river … Continue reading Running with eyes wide open – Cambodia

Cafe Stories – a moment in time.

Today I stood behind a guy in line at my local cafe, the smell of moth from his jacket attacking my senses. As I watched him order, I noticed his slow movements, and his distraction. He had long hair and from behind I couldn’t tell his age, just that moving around didn’t come that easy for him. He was gently spoken, so I couldn’t hear what he was saying despite the fact that I was less than a meter behind him. He ordered and went and sat down at a table alone and it was then that I noticed that … Continue reading Cafe Stories – a moment in time.

Cafe Stories – Strangers in cafes

At the risk of being Captain Obvious when I say this, I tend to spend a lot of time in cafes alone. I enjoy it and find that I can really get my thoughts down on paper when I’m sitting in a café drinking coffee. Occasionally, I will go to a café and just sit and watch the world around me; not read or write or play with my phone, just watch. And when you stop and watch for long enough, you see some really interesting things. Recently when I was at a café alone just observing the people around … Continue reading Cafe Stories – Strangers in cafes

Cafe stories – staring.

As is probably evident by my many café stories posts, I frequent cafes often. And most of the time I go alone. I’m confortable going to a café and having coffee and a meal alone. I get to just sit back with my coffee and either write, read or observe people. And one of the things I observe is that people stare. A lot. Sometimes it’s obvious why people are staring at someone; they look different to everyone else, or they are talking loudly or acting in a way that draws attention. Some people stare because they are fascinated by … Continue reading Cafe stories – staring.

Tis the season…

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas….with madness in every store! You know that it’s Christmas when you go to the shopping centre and find yourself faced with countless people running around madly, shopping bags dragging behind them and frowns that can be seen from a mile away. So much Christmas cheer and peace, especially when you hear the car horns blaring in the car park. I’ve learnt to keep my windows closed in the car park because I really don’t want to hear all the charming phrases people throw at each other. You really gotta wonder about what … Continue reading Tis the season…
