The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing – Psalm 23:1
If there was someone in the bible who wanted for nothing, it was King David. As king, he had everything he wanted at his fingertips. That was nothing that he couldn’t have. Including things that he shouldn’t have. While he reigned as king, he lived in luxury and excess. But David also knew what it was like to have nothing. Before he became king, he was a young shepherd boy with little earthly possessions and no social standing. He lived out both extremes of wealth and lack throughout his life.
Yet when David penned the words, ‘the Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing‘ it is believed he wrote them whilst he was King during a time of political instability, distress, and personal turmoil for him. Despite the circumstances he found himself in, David still boldly declared the he lacks nothing because God is his shepherd. He looked to God and was confident that God would protect him and provide for him. He wasn’t consumed by his circumstances and instead choose to fix his eyes and heart on God.
Like David, we can look to God as our good Shepherd. He is our comforter, protector, provider, healer, redeemer. When we put our hope, trust, and faith in Jesus, we can confidently say that despite our circumstances, we lack nothing, because He is more than enough.
