I have been a little silent on here for a while. Life has been life with ups, downs, and everything in between. There is a lot that I have to say, but I am choosing to not write much and instead, sit back and let God be God. I am choosing to mediate on His goodness, kindness, and love. One of the things that helps me to do that is to have scripture written out on post-it notes and stuck up in places that I see regularly.
One of the verses that I have stuck up is Psalm 27:1. I have it posted to the light switch next to my desk, and it’s one that I look at regularly.
But today, as I went to switch on the lights at my desk, this verse captured my attention and I found myself thinking about it more:
The Lord is my light and my salvation—
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life—
of whom shall I be afraid?
As I read this verse over a few times, my eyes kept going to ‘the Lord is my’. The word ‘my‘ in this verse makes it a powerful verse in that it reminds us that David, the original author of this Psalm, was claiming God as his. God was his light and salvation, so he had no one to fear. And David’s words, thousands of years later, were reminding me that I can make the same claim.
God is my light and salvation.
The Lord is mine, and I am His.
It is a powerful reminder that God is not some distant deity in the sky watching us from afar. No. He is as close as close can be. He walks closely with us every moment of the day, leading, guiding, and protecting us. This doesn’t mean that life will be easy or we won’t deal with suffering or trials or despair. No, those things will likely come in some form. But we won’t face them alone because God is with us.
What this verse also reminded me today, was that because God is my light and salvation, I have nothing to fear. Because He is my stronghold, I have no one to fear. Attacks may come, and they have and still are, but I am not in fear of who they come from, nor am I am fear of what the attacks are. When I know that God is my light and salvation, I can look the enemy in the eye, smile, and keep going with my life, trusting that God has got me.
When we remind ourselves that the Creator of the universe loves us, protects us, and fights for us, not against us, we can be certain that we have nothing and no one to fear.
Fear is not our future, God is.
As you go about your day, I pray that you would feel the closeness of Jesus, and know that if you allow Him, He will be your light and salvation, too.
