In the time period that David wrote this psalm, it was common practice that when a host had a guest of honour at their party, they would have a table set for them and would publicly anoint their head with oil as a sign of honour, respect, and love.
In his relationship with God, David was confident that not only was he loved, but he was provided and cared for like beloved guest of honour. David also knew that despite the enemies that were around that sought to destroy him, God would still provide and care for him. God would defend him and honour him in front of everyone. As God’s beloved children, He provides the same love and care for us. He sets a table for us in the presence of all, including our enemies or those that may wish us harm, and provides for for us. And He defends us. He protects us.
When the attacks keep coming, and sometimes they will, God continues to provide in His way. He will defend us in a way that we can’t defend ourselves. Sometimes, we want justice quickly, or we want to retaliate and clear our name. But when we trust in the Lord and allow Him to defend us, the impact is greater. And what’s more, for those of us that call Jesus, Lord, He sets a table that has exactly what we need on it. It may not always be what we want, but it’s what we need. God is generous in His provision; He does not set a half empty table but a full one. When God looks at you, He sees a beloved child and He holds you in a position of honour. He loves you. Deeply, unconditionally, and eternally.
Whatever you may be facing today, take a seat at the table that God has set for you and allow Him to anoint your head with oil. Allow Him to provide for you and care for you in ways that you may not have realised you needed. Let Him be your comfort and protector.
Prayer
Father, thank you that even in the presence of our enemies, you still provide for us and hold us in a position of honour. Thank you that You defend us in ways that we can’t defend ourselves. Help is to rest in your love and trust in your goodness today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
